A SHORT TRIP TO A LEGENDARY VIEWPOINT
This is a proposal of a short trip by car to one of the best viewpoints in the area. The drive from the center of Omiš takes only 10 minutes, and from Villa Bugenvilla 15-20 minutes. You should drive towards the village of Gata and leave the car in the parking lot just around the corner, a dozen or so meters behind the viewpoint, which you will recognize by the Mile Gojsalić monument. From here there is a beautiful panorama of the Cetina canyon and its mouth to the Adriatic Sea.
The legend of Mila Gojsalić:
Mile Gojsalić or the Croatian Joan of Arc (as she is often called) is a folk heroine, born in the village of Kostanje in Dalmatian hinterland. It was the year 1530, when the Ottoman wars were raging in these areas and huge danger came upon the region of Poljica in Omiš hinterland. The Ottoman Ahmed-Pasha gathered army of 10.000 men and made a camp in the village of Podgradje, with plans to conquer the area. Defeat seemed imminent for the local people, but the famous Ahmed-Pasha took notice of a beautiful young girl – Mila Gojsalić. Although disgusted by the fearsome Ottoman man, Mila forged a cunning plan. She gave herself willingly to Ahmed-Pasha and spent the night in his tent. Then, when all soldier and their leader fell asleep – Mila acted. She sneaked out of the tent and blew up the Ottoman army`s munitions stockpile, killing Ahmed-Pasha, many of his soldiers and, as a great sacrifice for her people, also herself. Completely exhausted, Mila chosed to jump from a cliff rather than fall into Ottoman hands once again.
The courageous act completely shocked the remaining Turkish soldiers, who were then quickly overrun by local people, which is how the Poljica region was saved from the savage Ottomans.
On that very spot, where she allegedly took her own life, now stands the monument of Mila, watching over Policja and Omiš even in her death.
