MIRABELLA AND FORTICA

VIEWPOINTS ON HISTORIC FORTRESSES

One day of your stay at the Villa Bugenvilla should definitely be reserved for exploring two fortresses, towering over Omiš – Mirabella (lower) and Fortica (located much higher).

Mirabella – a short climb to the 13th century pirate fortress, above the Omiš old town, is definitely something, you shouldn`t miss. It`s no more than a five-minute walk from central Omiš square to the top of the fortress, offering a magnificant view over the entire town and the nearby island of Brač. Here you can experience the mountain spirit of Omiš, and enjoy the same view that ancient pirates had, while they kept the town safe from constant threats from sea. The entrance fee to Mirabela is 30 kuna for adults and 10 kuna for children.

How to get there? You will need to get to the main church in the very centre of the old town. Just left to the main church entrance, you will see a lot of stairs climbing up. Take the stairs and follow the signs leading to Mirabela.

Located high above the city Fortica, a former pirate shelter, occupies the top of a 300-meter-high rock. It was built in the 14th century and offers a spectacular, panoramic view of the mountain valleys of Mosor, the Adriatic coast, the mouth of the Cetina River and the islands of Brač and Hvar. Looking down, you can see Omiš in the distance, looking from this perspective like a town made of Lego bricks.

How to get there? There are several paths, you can take up to Fortica. The easiest and most frequently used path leads up from the pasta factory of Prerada (across the street from the Omiš port). After climbing up the curvy local road for a couple of minutes, you should see a sign marking the paths to Fortica on your left. From this point you have about 50 minutes of quite easy climbing along a well marked forest path to reach your ultimate goal.

If you do not feel strong enough to cover the entire route, you can drive your car to the end of the asphalt road (Put Baučića street) and from there you will have about half the route to walk.

The entrance fee to Fortica is 20 kuna. Please take a note – never climb up to Fortica after 6 PM, as it could be tricky to climb down after it gets dark, always have enough water (at least 1 bottle) and proper footwear. Don`t hesitate to ask Villa Bugenvilla staff If you have any question about this tour.
